StreamNet Library Opening


Job Title: Library Volunteer

Department: Fisheries Science/StreamNet Library

Overview:

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC), as part of its contract obligation to the StreamNet Project, maintains a library of Columbia Basin information, with an emphasis on fisheries. The library collection is made up of agency technical reports and other gray literature. The library is cataloged on OCLC and shares its catalog via the Web.

The StreamNet Project is a multi-agency project of fisheries (mostly salmon) data and GIS information.

The library also assists fisheries researchers and tribal members with access to information. Volunteers will have opportunities to assist with reference requests and will gain experience using a variety of resources.

Position Description: 5-10 hours per week, to assist with the organization and implementation of a digital library initiative. Volunteers will be asked to assist with a variety of other standard library tasks, including materials organization, cataloging, reference, bibliography preparation, digitization of documents, some HTML coding, and Internet searching. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about environmental and tribal issues in the Columbia River Basin.

Supervision Received

 The library volunteers will be supervised by the StreamNet Library staff.

Supervision Given:

None.

Compensation / College Credit: No compensation will be provided by CRITFC. College credit is negotiable with the approval of the educational institution.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office environment with adequate heating, lighting, and ventilation.  Some privacy is provided for concentration and telephone conversations.  Incumbent will be in proximity to and will interact with other staff.  Interactions with other staff are required for the purpose of advice, assistance, and cooperation in identifying, defining, and solving problems and to exchange and coordinate information, ideas and concepts. 

The work requires a great amount of concentration and attention to detail.  There is a limited amount of activity while moving about the Library and CRITFC offices.  Work is computer-intensive and requires the ability to view video display terminals.   Periodic lifting of heavy boxes (50 pounds) and shifting of the library collection is required.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge/Experience/Skills : (Already have or wanting to learn)

Ø Experience with scanners, Adobe Acrobat (full version), Dreamweaver and other computer software and peripherals.

Ø Experience using the World Wide Web and other Internet resources.
Ø  Accuracy and attention to detail;
Ø  Ability to use Windows and Microsoft Office applications or the equivalent software;
Ø  Excellent inter-personal communication skills;
Ø  Ability to work positively with a team of professionals;
Ø  Flexibility, creativity, dependability, and adaptability.

Ø  Experience in fisheries, biology, or other natural science;
Ø  Experience in information science, library science, records management, or a closely related field;
Ø  Knowledge of procedures and techniques for organizing and maintaining library resources;
Ø  Experience with basic library reference procedures;
Ø  Knowledge of natural resource issues, particularly fisheries, and geography in the Columbia River Basin;
Ø  Knowledge of Native American cultures and treaty rights issues;
